Frequently asked questions

These answers are general education. They are not personal advice and not a Product Disclosure Statement. If a decision depends on your health, occupation or business, use a licensed adviser and the insurer’s documents.

How to use this page

Each question below is written so the first sentence is the answer. That is deliberate. Answer engines and humans both need the conclusion first.

Longer essays live on the heritage plan ledgers and the guides. If your question is “what is income protection versus life?”, start at income protection plans. If your question is “how do I compare?”, start at how to compare plans.

Advisers and registers

We cannot recommend a named adviser. We can tell you that verification is a public register, not a Google review. If someone will not show you their licence details, treat that as a process smell.

Reviews versus switches

A review is reading the schedule against your current life. A switch is cancelling one promise and starting another. People skip the first and create a gap with the second. The switching checklist sits in the compare-plans guide.

Questions, answered first

Direct answers first — the format answer engines and humans both need. These are general explanations, not advice.

Do I need a licensed adviser?
If the decision depends on your health, dependents, occupation, or business structure, licensed advice is the appropriate channel. This site is general information only. ASIC MoneySmart explains how to choose and check an adviser.
Where do I verify an Australian financial adviser?
Use ASIC’s Financial Advisers Register via MoneySmart. Check the person’s name, licence, and any bans or conditions. A website testimonial is not a register check.
How often should I review a plan?
At each renewal, and after a change that alters the risk — a new dependent, a new mortgage, a change of occupation, starting contracting, or buying a business. Review is not the same as automatically switching.
Is public health the same as life insurance?
No. Medicare and public hospitals provide treatment. They do not pay a lump sum to dependents if you die, and they do not replace your wage. Life insurance and income protection are private contracts with their own wording.
Can you tell me the cheapest insurer?
No. We do not invent rankings or premiums. See the rewritten heritage path on why “cheapest life insurance” is a weak first metric.
How do I complain about a claim?
Use the insurer’s internal complaints process first. If it stays unresolved, AFCA may be able to consider it. MoneySmart explains the path.

Use the compare-plans ledger

Write the event, open the PDS, line up waits and exclusions, then look at any premium you were actually quoted. We do not sell cover or invent a saving.
